Why does the stock price fall even when trading volume is high?
High trading volume and a significant price increase are two different things.

Remember this first
First, 3 things to remember
- 1Trading volume is the number of shares traded.
- 2Trading value is the sum of the amounts used in trades.
- 3High trading volume alone does not indicate whether a price will rise or fall.
Let's start by separating the quantity and the amount.
If 3 shares of a stock priced at 10 dollars are traded, the trading volume is 3 shares and the trading value is 30 dollars. If the same stock is traded repeatedly among multiple people, it is added each time.
Every trade involves both a buyer and a seller. It does not mean that a trading value of 1,000,000 dollars has entered the company's bank account. Chart bar colors also vary by platform, so do not assume who bought based solely on color.
It can also go down while being traded heavily.
While the price is rising, 100,000 shares may be traded, and while it is falling, the same 100,000 shares may be traded. The trading volume in the example below is the same, but the starting and ending prices are different.
Look at where the price started and ended alongside the trading volume. Practice reading the fact of active trading and the price direction separately.
| Interval | Volume | Start → End | More to see |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 100,000 shares | $2.00 → $2.20 | Is the price increase being maintained? |
| B | 100,000 shares | $2.20 → $2.00 | Is it going down further? |
You also need a benchmark when comparing to normal times.
If 100 shares are traded in a range where 10 shares are usually traded, that is 10 times the volume. It feels different from 100 shares in a range where 10,000 shares are usually traded. You must also look at the comparison basis alongside the multiplier.
The 1-minute acceleration of WAPE uses up to 20 completed 1-minute intervals from the same trading time zone just before detection for comparison. The benchmark is the median, which is the middle value when those values are arranged in order of size. If there is no benchmark or it is 0, it is marked as —. You do not need to memorize the calculation method now.
You should not make such assumptions
“If the trading value is 1,000,000 dollars, does that mean 1,000,000 dollars of new money has entered?”
It is the sum of the amounts traded between people. It does not mean that that much new money has entered the company.
Check what you have read.
- Did you distinguish between the number of shares and the trading amount?
- Has the time for the candle you are looking at ended?
- Have you checked the price direction and the comparison period?
