How do you interpret the statement that trading volume is several times higher than usual?
Even with the same 5x multiple, what it is compared against matters.

Remember this first
First, 3 things to remember
- 1Relative volume is the current volume divided by a comparison benchmark.
- 2Comparing the entire day to just a few minutes in the morning changes the meaning.
- 3You cannot determine the probability of an increase based solely on a multiple.
The comparison benchmark is the denominator.
If you compare the current volume of 100 shares to the usual 20 shares, it is 5 times higher. In division, the comparison number placed at the bottom is called the denominator. Relative volume is this value compared to the usual, and it is also referred to as RVOL.
Each service has a different way of defining the baseline. You must first check whether it is an average of the last few days, an average up to the same time, or on a per-minute basis.
Do not mix daily and morning data.
Comparing today's morning volume of 500,000 shares to the usual 100,000 shares at the same time results in 5 times. Comparing it to the usual full-day volume of 1,000,000 shares results in 0.5 times. Even if the volume is the same, the comparison target is different.
Differences in multiples, as shown in the numbers below, may not be calculation errors. Do not place multiples side-by-side if you do not know what they are being compared against.
| Cumulative Volume | Comparison benchmark | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 500,000 shares | Average of 100,000 shares at the same time | 5x |
| 500,000 shares | Daily average of 1,000,000 shares | 0.5 times |
Being active is different from rising.
Even if volume increases suddenly, the price may fall. Check if there was any news and the price direction at the same time.
WAPE's trading value acceleration is calculated differently from the volume ratio. First, distinguish that trading value is the transaction amount, not the number of shares.
You should not make such assumptions
“If trading volume is 5x, will the stock price also rise significantly?”
It is the size of the volume compared to the usual level. It cannot be converted into the probability of a stock price increase.
Check what you have read.
- What is the ratio compared to?
- Is it the trading volume up to the same time?
- Is the comparison benchmark too small?
