Remember this first
First, 3 things to remember
- 1There is a pre-training verification process for trading leverage ETPs at domestic securities firms.
- 2Distinguish between completing the education at the institute and registering the completion number with your brokerage.
- 3Applicable requirements may vary depending on the product type and whether it is a new account.
This is a procedure to be aware of when trading in Korea.
ETP is a collective term for products listed and traded on an exchange, such as ETFs and ETNs. The Korea Financial Investment Association provides the "Domestic and Overseas Leverage ETP Guide" as a mandatory pre-education course and specifies the effective date for mandatory overseas leverage ETP pre-education as 2025, 12, 15.
This text explains the education and registration procedures for investors using domestic brokerage firms. It does not mean that the same procedures apply to all accounts worldwide simply because you are a Korean national. You must check with your brokerage firm regarding applicability or exemptions based on product type, classification as a general or professional investor, and existing trading history.
The name to look for is the Domestic and International Leverage ETP Guide.
The institute lists this as a 1-hour course. The education is a procedure to understand the structure and risks of leverage and inverse products. It is not completed simply by payment or application; you must meet the current completion requirements, such as progress and evaluation for the applied course. Also, check for any notices regarding course revisions.
According to the training center, those who have previously completed the "Leverage ETP Guide at a Glance" do not need to retake the basic course. However, you must separately verify whether the completion is recognized and if it is registered with your brokerage firm. The name of the trainee must match the name on the brokerage account.
The completion number is information registered with the securities firm.
This is the process of submitting the number on your certificate to the education completion registration menu in your brokerage app. The menu name and processing method in the app vary by brokerage.
- 1
First, check with your brokerage firm to see if the product requires pre-trade education and what courses are necessary.
- 2
Apply under your own name on the official Korea Financial Investment Association (KOFIA) website and meet the current completion requirements.
- 3
Check your completion number in the 'Completed Courses' or 'Certificate' menu under 'MY' on the institute's website.
- 4
Submit the information according to your brokerage firm's education registration path and verify that the registration is complete.
- 5
Do not assume that information is automatically shared when using a different securities firm; check the registration status for that specific account.
Check separate requirements for single-stock products.
You must distinguish between products targeting semiconductor indices, such as SOXL and SOXS, and leverage products targeting a single company's stock. The 2026 Financial Services Commission guidelines explain separate investor protection requirements, such as basic and advanced education, minimum deposit requirements, and mock trading, for new individual general investors in domestic and foreign single-stock leverage products.
Therefore, one cannot say that “completing 1 hours of basic training prepares you for trading all leverage products.” Conversely, requirements for single-stock products should not be applied identically to all sector index ETFs. Check the latest notices from your securities firm regarding the specific product and account. This does not mean that WAPE mock investment records are recognized as official mock trading completion for this system.
Check if you cannot place an order despite having completed the education.
Check for errors in the completion number, name mismatches, incomplete brokerage registration, or whether a different educational course was completed. Beyond education, other brokerage trading conditions such as account agreements and investor verification may remain. You should check the brokerage firm's guidance messages or contact their customer service to determine the reason for failure.
Tuition, application periods, and completion requirements may change as courses are revised. Do not apply based solely on expired courses found in searches or old blog posts; check the current courses and notices from the education center. You must not proceed by using someone else's completion number.
Completion of education is not a safety certification for the product.
Completing the education means you have finished the required learning procedure. It is not a certification that prevents investment losses or guarantees profits. Even if the trade button is enabled, you must separately understand the product's daily objectives, compounding, costs, and exchange rate risks.
The verification date for this text is 2026, 10, 20. When preparing to trade, check both the sources in the text and the latest guidance from your trading securities firm. This content is intended to advise against confirming applicability based solely on general articles.
You should not make such assumptions
“If I have the completion number, can I safely trade all leverage products?”
Education completion, brokerage registration, product-specific trading requirements, and investment risks are separate matters. In particular, you must check additional requirements for single-stock products.
Check what you have read.
- Have you read the product information provided by the domestic brokerage firm?
- Does the account holder's name match the name of the person who completed the course?
- Have you confirmed that your completion number registration is complete?
- Have you distinguished between the basic education requirements and the separate requirements for individual stocks?
