13F, a report showing which stocks an institution held
You can view the holdings of large investment firms, but it does not show real-time trading.

Remember this first
First, 3 things to remember
- 113F reports information on holdings of certain reportable securities as of the end of the quarter.
- 2By the time you view the document, the holdings may have already changed.
- 3It is not data that reveals total assets or all trading strategies.
Think of it as a snapshot taken at the end of the quarter.
A quarter is a 3-month period. 13F is a report showing which reportable securities an institution held at the end of the quarter. The filing date of the document and the reference date of the snapshot are different.
You cannot tell from this single snapshot whether they still hold the shares or exactly when and at what price they bought them. Do not conclude that you should buy now just because a large institution is there.
The snapshot does not include all assets.
13F covers specific reportable securities. It does not include all assets, nor does it fully disclose short positions. A position refers to the current investment status.
You cannot conclude that an institution expects only an increase based on some stock holdings. Also, distinguish options, which are rights to buy or sell stocks, from common stock.
Compare using the same criteria as the previous report.
The number of shares may change if a company name changes, or if there is a stock split or merger. Do not assume that a new name automatically means a new purchase.
Check the institution name, reporting period, security type, and whether it is an amendment together. If the numbers have increased significantly, the next step is to verify whether it was an actual trade or a stock count adjustment.
You should not make such assumptions
“Because it is in the 13F, the institution is still betting on an increase.”
This is a partial list of holdings from a past point in time. It does not show the current total investment status.
Check what you have read.
- Which quarter-end snapshot is it?
- Did you distinguish between stocks and options?
- Did you assume that the status is still the same?
